Spartanburg School District 1 scored the largest percentage of ABC — Arts in Basic Curriculum — grant funding of any district in the state.

District 1 has brought in some $67,000 to support comprehensive arts education. Campobello-Gramling School, Inman Intermediate School, Mabry Middle, Landrum Middle, New Prospect Elementary, O.P. Earle Elementary and Holly Springs-Motlow Elementary make up seven of 85 total ABC sites statewide.

The funding is designed to level student access to arts education by providing schools with resources such as equipment, professional development, field trips, artist-in-residence programs and other activities.

“Research shows that arts education aids students in skills such as the ability to be creative, innovative, solve problems and communicate, which are necessary for the workplace,” the school district said in a statement.

The ABC blueprint works on the idea that the arts are an “indispensable part of a complete education,” the statement said.

The ABC Institute is a joint effort by the S.C. Arts Commission, the South Carolina Department of Education, and the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Winthrop University.
