The mission of the arts at Pine Street School is to provide every child with a substantive, comprehensive, sequential education in the arts and to use the arts as a means to create deeper meaning of all content areas and support 21st Century learning skills. An inner-city, neighborhood school of choice, Pine has 686 students, 6 grade levels and 35% free/reduced lunch. Pine Street Elementary School was one of the original ABC model sites. Conceived and developed by Mary Koutroulias and Anne Predmore, this program has a fine reputation. Dance, music, and visual arts are taught weekly by certified arts specialists. A part-time, district funded theater teacher provides theater for students on a semester basis. A long-term drama residency provides classroom teachers with arts infusion. Professional development for each teacher in arts infusion is made available through Spartanburg 7 and ABC Arts Advancement Grant. Every March the students enjoy Evening with the Arts which includes student performances that showcase the artists’ week. Each student’s artwork is exhibited. Pine Street joins Muse Machine. Membership entitles students to attend community arts events at reduced rates. Pine Street has 2 choral groups, Pine Street Dance Ensemble and hosts performances yearly. Pine Street Palette and 3-D Art Club serve 5th grade. 4th and 5th grades participate in Drama Club. 3 D Art Club and Drama Club are during the school day and are available to the students who do not attend the gifted program. Pine Street participates in a yearly production with singers, dancers, actors and backstage crew made up of students and a cast of 300. Pine Street has received ABC and DAP grants since the Target 2000 years and been recognized as Excellent on the State Report Card.
