Ashley River Creative Arts Elementary School, in partnership with parents and community, will provide all students the opportunity to reach their maximum potential through an arts integrated academic curriculum providing relevant, diverse, and challenging learning experiences in a safe and positive environment. ARCA is a magnet school for children living in the West Ashley area of Charleston. Admission is by lottery only with residency being the only requirement. There are 600+ students in grades Kindergarten to Fifth grade and include four classes of self-contained Autism students and Low Incidents students. It is a diverse population with a 30% poverty index. Students are immersed in the arts throughout their day. They attend classes in visual arts, music, drama, Spanish, computer, and physical education twice a week, and can opt to take Suzuki violin and ballet. In addition, classroom teachers use the arts daily to teach and reinforce skills in all subject areas through units of study based on state standards. Arts specialists reinforce the learning in their classrooms as well as teaching their standards. During the last period of the day, fourth and fifth graders are involved in performing groups and clubs. They audition at the beginning of the year for a yearlong commitment to their selected group. Clubs offered include drama, chorus, drums, guitar, art clubs, dance troupe, garden club, recycling, Wellness, and Creative Writing. Gifted and talented students are supported during this time and also in a District summer camp. The After School program offers many enrichment classes for students. Ashley River has been recognized by the SC Arts Commission with the Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Award and is a Palmetto’s Finest School, a National Blue Ribbon School and John F. Kennedy Center School of Distinction. The school provides a residency for every grade level each year. Ashley River has received the DAP grant since 2007.
