The arts mission of Cherryvale Elementary School is to integrate the visual and performing arts (creative writing, dance, drama, media arts, music, and visual arts) in academic areas to prepare students for life-long learning.” Cherryvale Elementary strives to achieve established goals and objectives that support the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. Faculty and staff provide daily opportunities for students to participate in well prepared instructional activities and to reflect upon personal choices made throughout the day. Within a safe, caring, and academically challenging learning environment, students focus on creating their best work, achieving personal satisfaction for their accomplishments, and maintaining behavioral expectations. To support students, the guidance counselor teaches character education lessons and encourages students to surpass their academic and social expectations.
Cherryvale Elementary is a Green Steps School and an Arts in Basic Curriculum (ABC) School, as recognized by the South Carolina Green Steps Schools Environmental Education Initiative and the South Carolina Arts Commission. Gifted and talented students are involved in after school arts programs, and they also participate in Sumter School District’s REACH Summer Arts Program, a four-week program for students in grades 3-12. Artists-in-residence opportunities are provided in a variety of art areas to enable students to interact with musicians, artists, authors, storytellers, dancers, and actors. Through collaboration with arts teachers, classroom teachers will develop units and lessons that integrate all six art forms. Existing arts classes will be expanded, and opportunities for involvement in other art areas will be provided in order to increase student achievement and involvement in the arts.
Increasing student achievement requires the support of three instructional coaches for curriculum, mathematics, and reading. Teachers and staff use professional development training sessions to create high progress literacy classrooms, to develop hands-on science experiences, to provide individual and small group learning opportunities, and to incorporate manipulatives in mathematics classrooms.
Maintaining partnerships among administrators, teachers, parents, students, and community members assist the school with developing students who become leaders. Thus, Cherryvale Elementary School strives to educate students and help them meet the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate.
