Felton Laboratory Charter School has existed as a year-round public charter school serving approximately four hundred K-8 Students for three years on the campus of South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, SC. The mission of Felton Laboratory Charter School (FLCS) will be to provide a rigorous, creative and a diverse learning environment through Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). This interdisciplinary approach to learning allows all students to creatively examine the relationship that all subjects play in preparing them for life in a global society, postsecondary education and the career of their choice. Felton has a free and reduce lunch rate of 73% with 7% of the school’s population classified as special needs. The school provides standards-driven learning experiences and assessment in four of the major arts disciplines (i.e. dance, theater, art, music). Our students participate in additional arts classes through three after school grant programs (i.e. DAP, EEDA, 21st CCLC) all of which allows the students to explore and develops their awareness about careers and jobs in the Arts. Participating students also have the opportunity to extend their learning in and through the arts with after school dance, instrumental music and theater classes. Also, beginning in the fall, students who have been identified as artistically gifted will participate in weekly afterschool arts advance arts classes. These students spend their time preparing for an adjudicated process that will qualify them to participate in a Tri-County Summer Arts Program. This will be Felton’s third year as an ABC site.
