H.E. McCracken Middle School sits esteemed in the Bluffton, SC community in Beaufort County. Previously, an 8th-9th grade feeder campus for the community high school, H.E. McCracken recently underwent significant change and became a 6th-8th grade middle school. The HEMMS faculty is made of 63 teachers who serve over 800 students. We have a variety of cultures and ethnicities within our school and use the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) approach to engage all learners. Through the generous ABC grant, we have worked to provide teachers with professional development, students with additional opportunities, and our campus with the state of the art equipment necessary for a thriving arts program. HEMMS is committed to the arts and ensuring that our students receive an arts integrated education. Displayed student work is celebrated on walls outside of classrooms and indicates the arts integration that is embedded in the faculty’s instruction. Each teacher is responsible for creatively incorporating the arts into their classroom content and objectives. Beaufort County school district, along with HEMMS, offers Gifted and Talented Arts programs in the areas of dance, theatre, chorus, and band. As a newer school, we are constantly working towards improvement and bettering our programs and course offerings. In the future, we plan to strengthen our relationships with community artists, offer more field trip studies, and provide teachers with more learning opportunities to continue our path to full arts integration. We are proud that we offer an education that incorporates each area of STEAM to our students, and we recognize each child’s creativity and celebrate their artistic talents.
