Hilton Head Island Elementary School for the Creative Arts, in collaboration with an engaged community, is committed to helping students develop world class skills, as well as life and career characteristics, in a rigorous Arts Infused learning environment that is safe and nurturing. As an Arts Infused School of Choice, the school community mission is to provide a program that enables all students to be competent, competitive and successful in an ever-changing global society. Hilton Head Island is located in the Beaufort County School District. It is one of two public schools of choice for students in grades one through five. 787 students attend Creative Arts, a Title 1 school with a 62% free and reduced lunch status. Demographically, the school is 42% White, 39% Hispanic, 15% African American and 4% other, such as two or more races and Asian. Application for STEM accreditation during the 2016-17 school year will support the school’s goal of becoming a model STEAM school. All Creative Arts students participate in Visual Art, Music, Dance, Theatre, Creative Writing, STEAM Lab and Lego Lab classes taught by certified arts teachers. In addition, all of these same art forms are intentionally considered in the planning, teaching and assessing of student learning in Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies provided by the “regular” classroom teacher. Both the arts classes offered and the integration of the arts across all classrooms, often done with collaboration between these two groups of teachers, create an exciting, advanced and creative way for children to learn. Before and after school programs in theatre, art, music, dance and technology provide students identified Gifted and Talented in the arts additional opportunities. For others it helps to identify and prepare students for the GT Arts assessment. A recipient of the national 2010 John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Schools of Distinction in Arts Education award for providing exemplary arts education programs and receipt of the 2014 and 2015 South Carolina Department of Education’s Palmetto Gold award for academic excellence validates the efforts of a well-trained and dedicated staff committed to help our students on their path to success.
