McDonald Green Elementary is public K-5 school in rural Lancaster, SC with 404 students from a diverse demographic that includes a balanced ratio of African American and Caucasian students as well as a 7% Hispanic population. 67% of these students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Their teachers incorporate visual arts, drama, music, and dance into their curriculum to bring learning to life, ensure permanency of knowledge, and appeal to multiple learning styles. The school’s mission is the development of independent learners and responsible citizens who value diversity and the arts. To provide the materials needed for arts integrated lessons MGE provides an arts supply closet, theatre set units, props, costumes, scripts, world percussion instruments, electric pianos, a CD library, an interactive garden space with farm animals and art installations, and arts integration professional development. Each grade level participates in a performance or art show and goes on a field trip to watch a live performance. McDonald Green hires part-time teachers or employs artists in residence in the areas of dance and drama to ensure students are exposed to all art disciplines. Students have the opportunity to be involved in several district arts events and display their work in downtown Lancaster through art competitions, Honor Choir, the Banner Project, art shows, and designing downtown art installations with a professional artist. McDonald Green also has a chorus that meets before school and a 21st Century after school program that offers a variety of courses in music, art, dance, and drama.
