The mission of Nursery Road Elementary School is to motivate, empower, and support students to accomplish individual goals within challenging curricula and to develop successful citizens in a diverse community. Our vision is to increase student engagement and achievement by integrating Media, Visual, and Performing Arts into the curriculum in order to prepare students to become creative, self-motivated, and productive citizens.
Nursery Road Elementary School is a Title One school located in the suburban community of Irmo, SC. Our school serves 464 students in grades preK-5 who represent a diverse population of rich cultural backgrounds and abilities, with 25% receiving special education services and 56% of students receiving free/reduced lunch.
Nursery Road Elementary School is a first-year ABC Site and is currently underway to become an arts magnet school in the 2017-18 academic year. Nursery Road is the only ABC Site and elementary school arts magnet in the district. Our school has a 5-year plan to transition into a whole-school arts magnet that will offer an integrated curriculum of media, visual, and performing arts, using instructional strategies that draw upon the arts as a mechanism to teach core subject arts, while also expanding opportunities for students to participate in and experience all art forms.
Our school offers arts-focused before and after-school programs, where students can participate in activities including: ballroom dancing, African drumming, piano, dulcimer, steel drums, costume and prop construction, set design and construction, and Zumba. Nursery Road also produces two annual school wide performances that integrate the arts with social studies curriculum and we are proud to have 100% participation of students at every grade level and ability. We also host a Cultural Arts Festival that includes an entire day of activities in which guest artists from the community are invited to share their art form with students.
