Located at Richland Northeast High School and an ABC Site since 2001, the Palmetto Center for the Arts (PCA) is the Fine Arts Magnet for Richland School District Two. It is a nationally recognized program and the recipient of the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network Creative Ticket award for outstanding achievement in arts education. The mission of the Palmetto Center for the Arts is to challenge artistically gifted and talented students to develop their creative and academic potential through a rigorous, comprehensive, integrated and standards-based curriculum that prepares students for advanced study and careers in the arts.
The program includes dance, music, theatre, and visual arts and provides a challenging curriculum designed to offer students a strong foundation in the skills and knowledge of their arts discipline. PCA students may also participate in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme through their upper level arts courses.
PCA students are routinely recognized for outstanding accomplishment, earning superior ratings, all-state honors, first place awards and gold keys. Our theatre program has been selected five times to perform as part of the American High School Theatre Festival at the Edinburg Fringe in Scotland. Our chorus has performed at Walt Disney World, and our visual arts have had special exhibits of their work at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport, as well as Martin Gallery in Charleston. This year our band was honored to receive the Outstanding Performance Award (OPA), the most prestigious award given by the South Carolina Band Director’s Association, and our “Northeast Current,” electric string ensemble, was selected to perform for the SC Music Educators Association. Our theatre students won 1st Place in playwriting, and our visual arts students won 9 Scholastic Gold Key regional awards and 2 Silver Key National awards, as well as “Best of Show” at the State Fair.
