Pleasant Hill Middle School

District: Lexington 1  /  Site Since 2014

Pleasant Hill Middle School is committed to providing world-class, real-life opportunities to help all students develop the skills and characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate as our 746 students begin their secondary experience in school. PHMS educators focus on growing student-centered instructional practices, executive functioning within students, and authentic relationships with students and their families to foster a sense of belonging in the PHMS community. In 2020-2021, student focus groups advocated for a creative use of time in the schedule to foster learning, to build relationships, and to allow students to make choices around their own learning, so a PHMS design team created a rotating schedule that flips class times three times through the week, enabling students to encounter most subjects at different times of day. This creative use of time allows students to make choices within their schedule three days a week during an “Empower” class period, which is a time to build culture, support academics, and/or get additional rehearsal or work time in the arts. PHMS teachers model being life-long learners by implementing research-based best practices, collaborating on vertical alignment of state standards and content area skills, and analyzing data to guide instructional design. Faculty grow students as learners, as well as socially-emotionally, through the use of “Empower” activities grounded in Lexington One Power Skills, which supports students as they learn and implement such skills as critical thinking, perseverance, and collaboration.
