The mission of the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities is to serve the artistically talented high school students of South Carolina through programs of pre-professional instruction in an environment of artistic and academic excellence. The school’s arts concentrations include creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. Dancers can attend the residential high school for tenth through twelfth grades. All other art areas are two-year programs for eleventh and twelfth grade students. Students apply and audition to attend the school. In addition to residential high school programs, SCGSAH offers two-week summer programs in animation, creative writing, drama, music, and visual arts, as well as a five-week Summer Dance program. The school has been once again designated an “Exemplary School” for 2017-2019 by the Arts Schools Network (ASN), the nation’s largest professional membership organization of specialized arts schools, for its continued commitment and contributions to promoting excellence in arts education. In addition to rigorous pre-professional arts training, students receive an intense and innovative academic education that fosters connections to the arts while meeting all the requirements necessary for a South Carolina high school diploma. SCGSAH consistently ranks as one of South Carolina’s top three public high schools in SAT scores, and the school has been recognized in the top 1% of the nation’s high schools in several national rankings. As part of the mission to serve SC students and faculty, SCGSAH offers a comprehensive – and ever growing – series of Outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and students. These events take place both on and off campus. Along with schools and school districts, additional partners include arts organizations, state level arts education groups, Boys and Girls Clubs, and community enrichment centers.
