South Florence High School (SFHS) is located in the Pee Dee area South Carolina and the town of Florence. Florence is a community with a wonderful mix of suburban and rural life. This mid-sized Southern city is large enough to boast a performance theater, symphony orchestra, many ballet companies, museums, and several annual city-wide festivals. Residents demonstrate a love for the arts and Southern hospitality. SFHS has 1,564 students with 59 % free/reduced rate. SFHS Fine Arts mission is to offer an innovative, comprehensive, quality arts education program that develops creative expression, active participation and lifelong learning through the arts. The arts faculty has worked aggressively for the past 15 years of implementing a “State of the Art” large-scale fine arts initiative. The goal is to increase all student learning, the effectiveness of teachers and participation in the arts. The Community Arts Partnership, which includes business and community leaders, administrators, a guidance counselor, teachers, parents, and students, developed the Fine Arts Strategic Plan. The plan lead to the expansion of the art program to include music appreciation, AP Studio arts, dance, and theatre and based on researched arts innovation, 2010 SCASVPA, the ABC Model, and elements of the Profile of the SC Graduate. With administrative support the Arts faculty has grown from four to eight teachers, request for Arts classes have increased from 473 (2006) to 963 (2015), and the Arts credits earned has increased from 589 (2006) to 968 (2016). SFHS now has students going to the Governor School for the Arts, won ribbons at regional visual arts shows, have students in the All-State-Chorus, won Superior ratings at band competitions, and have students participating in orchestra competitions. The SFHS family has a clear understanding of the ambitious efforts that are still required to meet the arts education goals.
