The Mission of the Spring Valley High School is to improve student learning in the arts by continuing exemplary arts program based on the 2017 SC Collage & Career Ready Visual and Performing Arts Standards for Proficiency, through proper sequential course scheduling, appropriate grouping, enriched opportunities through guest artist presentations, and quality and enriched arts integration into core subject areas for ALL students.” Spring Valley is suburban 9-12 grade high school located in northeast Columbia, SC. It has 2,046 students with 46 percent of students participating in Medicaid, SNAP, or TANF; homeless, foster, or migrant students (poverty index). Spring Valley is an arts centered school, offering Band, Chorus, Drama, Orchestra, Visual and Media Arts to all students. The Visual and Media Arts program offers 11 unique course offerings; including 4 courses open to any student at any skill level (Art I, Media Arts, Photography, and Art of Film). The vision is to continue to run an exemplary and distinguished visual and performing arts program, while also assisting with improving engagement, creativity, problem solving, and other world class skills listed on the SC Profile of a High School Graduate through quality arts integration in core subject areas. Currently, there are 25 non-arts teachers from Math, Science, Social Studies, English, Spanish, and Special Education who have begun integrating the arts into their everyday lessons with assistance from award winning Visual and Performing Arts faculty. The vision is to grow this number by 10 teachers each year for the next five years until the majority of all teachers at Spring Valley are teaching quality arts integrated lessons to all levels of students.
